With a sweeping victory in the Virginia legislature, giving Democrats control of the Assembly, Senate, and Governor, the once purple state seems to be inching ever closer to far reaching gun control bills being passed.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, who was plagued by controversy not too long ago for dawning black face in a yearbook photo, promised to pass several radical gun control measures if his party gained control of all three branches of the state government. Bills are already being introduced to implement universal background checks on all firearm transactions, ‘assault weapon bans,’ limiting gun purchases to once per month, unconstitutional Red Flag laws, and preventing lawful gun owners from keeping a loaded firearm in the house if children are present.
With the promise of radical gun control, many counties in the politically diverse state have decided to stand their ground. According to The Hill, more than 40 counties have declared themselves to be “2nd Amendment Sanctuaries.” Taking a page from the Leftist playbook – Sanctuary Cities – these counties pledged to not prosecute otherwise lawful gun owners who do not follow the new state wide gun regulations, and will not enforce such laws.
One Virginia county is taking things further than all the others. In a now viral Facebook post, the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office said the “unnecessary gun restrictions… will create enormous conflict” if passed.
“Every Sheriff and Commonwealth Attorney in Virginia will see the consequences if our General Assembly passes further unnecessary gun restrictions. “Red Flag” laws without due process will create enormous conflict as well.
America has more guns than citizens and murder has long been illegal. At best, the proposed gun restrictions will disarm or handicap our law-abiding in their defense and possibly cause a criminal to choose another tool for evil.
I’d like to thank our Board of Supervisors for their resolution of support of our citizen’s natural right to self defense as protected by our Constitutions. My office will always encourage and support our citizens in firearms training, concealed carry permits, and the ability to defend themselves and their families.
I remain very optimistic that our General Assembly will not pass the proposed bills. Obviously, if passed, there are many of us willing to challenge these laws through the courts. In addition, if necessary, I plan to properly screen and deputize thousands of our law-abiding citizens to protect their constitutional right to own firearms.”
-Sheriff Scott Jenkins
“A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves…and include all men capable of bearing arms.” (1788)
-Richard Henry Lee
America has more guns than any other nation, totaling 393 million, or 1.2 for every American, yet our murder rate has been in a long run decline. “At best, the proposed gun restrictions will disarm or handicap our law-abiding in their defense and possibly cause a criminal to choose another tool for evil.” Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins is referring to the nearly 3 million cases of self defense firearm usage every year.
Sheriff Jenkins then thanked the council for passing a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary “resolution of support of our citizen’s natural right to self defense as protected by our Constitutions”, joining the dozens of counties who have already done so.
Though Jenkins remains optimistic of the proposed bills not passing, he says if they he will “properly screen and deputize thousands of our law-abiding citizens to protect their constitutional right to own firearms.”
By deputizing, Sheriff Jenkins would give ordinary citizens, vetted by his department, the same firearm ownership rights as law enforcement. Jenkins adds there is no limit to the number of citizens he’s willing to deputize if it means protecting their God given rights.
