American Airlines Mechanic Accused of ‘Sabotaging’ Plane has Ties to ISIS

A mechanic for American Airlines who was arrested for tampering with an airliner had a slew of ISIS propaganda on his cell phone, according to FBI agents who performed the search.

Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, 60, a naturalized US citizen, told prosecutors ahead of his bail hearing last week that he had an “evil side” to him, which was responsible for attempting to bring down the plane which he worked on.

According to Fox News, Alani “allegedly displayed support for ISIS by making¬†statements about wishing Allah would use ‘divine powers’ to harm non-Muslims and sharing ISIS videos on his cellphone.” His cell phone had a number of pro-ISIS videos stashed on it, including one that shows an individual being executed.

Alani had also told co-workers his brother was kidnapped in Iraq and joined ISIS. Records also show he sent $700 to an unnamed individual in Iraq. The plane Alani sabotaged was a Boeing 737 with over 150 passengers headed for Nassau. According to the same report by Fox, the attempted sabotage was provoked by stalled union negotiations with American Airlines. His motives were also to get additional “overtime pay” as he was certain the issue would’ve been caught prior to liftoff, his attorney said.

“Alani glued styrofoam inside the nose of the aircraft that disabled a part used to gauge airspeed and other critical flight data.” Luckily, “pilots detected the issue before takeoff, and a subsequent inspection discovered the problem.” If it weren’t detected prior to take off, things could’ve been much worse.
