Cabot Phillips, media director of Campus Reform (a subsidiary of the Leadership Institute), traveled down to American University in Washington D.C. to get students opinions on several immigration related quotes by President Trump. Their responses were filmed and uploaded to the Campus Reform YouTube page on Tuesday.
When prompted about their thoughts on the push for border wall funding, one student replied “I am not a fan,” while another called it “absolutely horrendous.” The general consensus from the several students interviewed was that a wall was not needed, ineffective, and wrong.
Phillips then read off several quotes from President Trump about the border wall and immigration. The three statements were:
“I voted numerous times… to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in. And I do think you have to control your borders.”
“We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented and unchecked.”
“Illegal Immigration is wrong, plain and simple. Until the American people are convinced we will stop future flows of illegal immigration, we will make no progress.”
Only one problem… All three were from prominent democrats. Hillary Clinton in 2008, Barrack Obama in 2005, and Chuck Schumer in 2009, respectively took these positions on illegal immigration long before President Trump even got into politics.
One student said these quotes were “divisive” and that “America is the land of opportunity; place for inclusion.”
Another said “I just think it’s kind of hateful speech in general,” while a third said this is “hateful speech in general.”
Others commented on racial undertones, and jingoist philosophy. One thing for certain, all thought they were awful ideas, to sum up their general tone towards the three democrats statements. Students agreed the rhetoric was not helpful for furthering a discussion to find immigration reform and dehumanizes the people South of the border.
When the true identity of the quotes was revealed one confused student said “how ’bout that…”
Some were at a loss for words, unable to stop laughing. Another said “I umm mean yeah, democrats and republicans have said things about the border control.” Students were unsure of how to respond, and reluctant to argue against the democratic leaders who currently lead the fight against border reform.
Another, accepting the reality, said “if this were a Trump quote I believe it would be a lot more less calculated.”
“I don’t know, they just, they wouldn’t say like that,” said one student which prompted Phillips to say “they did.”
Girl: I don’t know, they just, they wouldn’t say like that
Philips: They did
Girl: It’s like their demeanor, like the way they come off is, like I don’t know what to say
One student was not surprised; a 26 year old grad student remembers the Clinton administration’s tough stance on immigration in the 90’s. Though their current stances have taken a complete 180 without any new reasoning behind it.
